If we do not teach our children the importance of their natural heritage, how can we expect them to care enough to preserve it?

ECOStudy is an environmental education program, implemented in partnership with WILDTRUST.
ECOStudy cultivates an understanding of biodiversity conservation and sustainable development in future generations through hands-on, experiential learning.
ECOStudy facilitates free-of-charge educational excursions to the Sontuli Environmental Education Centre in the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
Each year approximately 20,000 learners and residents of communities bordering the Park will participate in the programme. For many, this marks their first-ever visit to the Park, offering a transformative introduction to its natural beauty and ecological importance.
During the school term ECOStudy takes Grade 6 learners from non-fee-paying schools, to Sontuli on two-day, one-night trips, for curriculum related educational adventures.
During the school holidays, ECOStudy extends the programme to local community groups so they can be introduced to the wonders of the park.
ECOStudy is a not-for-profit, public benefit organisation governed by a Board of Trustees. The programme is implemented in partnership with WILDTRUST, which provides both administrative and fiduciary support. This partnership ensures that all donor funds are responsibly managed, transparently accounted for, and reported with integrity.
At ECOStudy, we believe that the first step toward a sustainable future is nurturing a deep connection with the environment. Our program empowers young minds to understand the beauty, importance, and fragility of the world around them—and inspires them to take action to preserve it.
ECOStudy ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION PROGRAMME
A child cannot develop a love for nature from behind a school desk
ECOStudy offers two programmes to promote Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and environmental literacy: a school-term programme for learners and a holiday programme for community groups.
A Unique Learning Experience for Scholars
ECOStudy’s core programme provides Grade 6 learners the opportunity for hands-on learning that brings the Natural Sciences syllabus to life.
During game drives and interactive activities, learners explore the key syllabus topics such as species classification, ecosystems, photosynthesis, water and climate change.
Participants receive activity books and educational resources that enhance their learning experience, making complex concepts more accessible and engaging.

Expanding Access to the Parks
The Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park is surrounded by impoverished communities that are often unaware of the park’s immense value or the critical role it plays in preserving biodiversity and in their lives.
During school holidays, ECOStudy extends its programme to include groups from these communities, offering tailored experiences that promote environmental understanding and stewardship.
Pressing local issues, such as poaching, invasive plant management, human-wildlife conflict, climate change, and sustainable resource use are discussed and debated. These interactions help build lasting connections between the neighbouring communities and the Park, strengthening their involvement in conservation efforts.
The programme engages a diverse range of groups, including
-
- Youth and environmental organisations
- Traditional healers
- Community leaders
- Workshops for educators, equipping teachers with the tools to integrate environmental education into their classrooms
- Excursions for people with disabilities, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to experience the wonders of nature.
Promoting cultural and historical awareness
Learning indigenous knowledge is crucial for developing a deeper understanding of the natural world and its ecosystems.
The Zulu people have long revered the land, maintaining a deep spiritual connection and living in harmony with nature for centuries. This wisdom, passed down through generations, is rooted in sustainable practices, respect for nature, and cultural traditions that have fostered a balanced relationship with the environment.
ECOStudy is committed to passing this invaluable legacy on to the youth, ensuring it is preserved for future generations and continues to inspire a deep respect for both culture and nature.

ECOStudy is honoured to have the support of His Majesty King Misuzulu Sinqobile kaZwelithini Zulu, whose leadership and dedication to preserving KwaZulu-Natal’s natural heritage are deeply valued.
His Majesty is firmly committed to safeguarding the province’s rich biodiversity and natural resources, recognising their vital importance to both ecological balance and the long-term well-being of local communities.
His endorsement greatly strengthens ECOStudy’s mission to advance environmental education and conservation, helping to ensure that future generations inherit a healthy, resilient, and sustainable environment.
We are also proud to have the support of the ten Amakhosi (traditional leaders) whose tribal lands border the Park, reflecting strong community alignment with and endorsement of the programme.
SONTULI ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CENTRE
-
- The Sontuli Environmental Education Centre is located within the iMfolozi Game Reserve, part of the larger Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park which falls under the jurisdiction of Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife (Ezemvelo).
- Situated along the scenic Black iMfolozi River, Sontuli offers an exceptional setting for learners to engage with and explore the natural beauty of this iconic reserve.
- ECOStudy will host approximately 20,000 learners annually at Sontuli, on two day, one night visits.
- The facility can accommodate up to 66 participants at a time.
- Currently undergoing restoration, the Centre will reopen in January 2026.
ECOStudy has secured contracts with key stakeholders to ensure the success of the program:
ECOStudy holds a contract with Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, the Park’s management authority, granting ECOStudy usufruct rights to the Sontuli Environmental Education Centre for a period of thirty years, with an option to renew. Whilst operating in partnership, ECOStudy remains fully autonomous and independent of Ezemvelo.
A formal agreement with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education provides ECOStudy with access to schools across the province, extending full support to the program’s educational initiatives.
ECOStudy operates independently of Ezemvelo and any government controlled entities, ensuring complete autonomy in its management and decision-making processes

COMMUNITY BENEFITS
ECOStudy prioritises the procurement of goods and services from local community businesses, with a strong emphasis on supporting women-owned enterprises. This inclusive approach not only stimulates the local economy but also fosters a sense of shared ownership and pride in the programme.
Employment opportunities have been created during the camp’s renovation phase, with permanent positions offered once operations begin.
Each year, these initiatives are expected to inject millions of rands into the local economy, helping to build sustainable livelihoods and support long-term economic growth in surrounding communities.
SUSTAINABILITY & CLIMATE CHANGE
Understanding Climate Change: Its Impact and Local Adaptation Strategies
Education is the key to a sustainable future. It plays a pivotal role in climate action, from raising awareness to identifying adaptation strategies and building resilience.
Through the ECOStudy programme, participants are introduced to the causes and effects of climate change. They explore how climate change is affecting the planet and examine the potential impacts on their own lives and communities. By understanding the science behind climate change and its global consequences, learners gain the knowledge needed to recognise the challenges ahead and become part of the solution.
These vulnerable communities are among those most severely impacted by climate change. ECOStudy emphasises the importance of adaptation strategies, showing how communities can adjust their lifestyles, economies, and environments to mitigate the effects of climate change.
Learners also explore how their communities can contribute to building a more resilient and sustainable future by embracing practical solutions and empowering local action.
A Focus on Sustainability
ECOStudy is committed to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), addressing nine of the 17 goals, with a special emphasis on raising awareness about climate change and fostering resilient, sustainable communities.
